Weedsport will apply for the next round of NY Forward Funding.
The Cayuga County Planning & Economic Development Department is assisting the village in this endeavor. Javier Zavaleta is a planner with the department who is helping the village complete the necessary steps and create the application to send to the state by the end of September.
Zavelata told Finger Lakes News Radio that they are currently seeking projects to consider for the application.
“We encourage stakeholders, business owners, and any property owner that has a project that fits within the eligible activities to fill out that form and then we guide them from that point on,” Zavelata said.
He added that projects should assist in revitalizing the village’s downtown such as rehabilitating a dilapidated building or expanding business operations through building upgrades or equipment purchases.
“[We’re] trying to provide the most compelling list of projects so we can have the most compelling application,” he continued.
Those interested in submitting projects can do so here.
A public workshop will take place May 23 at 6:00p at the village offices to discuss potential projects.
New for this year, applicants need to be pro-housing communities. The village has sent a letter of intent to become a pro-housing community to the state.
Launched last year, the NY Forward program is designed to revitalize downtowns in communities typically too small for DRI funding.
If selected as a recipient, a second call for projects will be put out with a local planning committee being formed to select which ones should receive funding. This process is the same as the process currently underway in the Villages of Aurora, Cayuga, and Union Springs for their $10 million DRI award.
The Villages of Moravia in Cayuga County, Phoenix in Oswego County, and Hamilton in Madison County won the inaugural NY Forward awards for the Central New York region.
