The Cayuga Museum of History & Art is launching a new annual program to recognize Auburn and Cayuga County’s role in nationally significant events.
The museum has launched the Richard N Hill History Conversations series to bring nationally recognized scholars to the museum to discuss the county’s role in national events and how the community’s history helps tell the story of the country.
“We’re looking at stuff that ties Auburn and Cayuga County into these larger historical moments and narratives,” Director of Development and Outreach Geoff Starks told FLX Local Media.
The first event in the program will be Through the Eyes of Lafayette & Tocqueville. The program will feature a conversation led by Julien Icher, President of the Lafayette Trail, Inc., and Dr. Olivier Zunz, James Madison Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Virginia, moderated by the Seward House Museum’s Dr Jeff Ludwig, and discuss the Marquis de Lafayette and Alexis de Tocqueville’s visits to Auburn and the US.
The conversation will discuss who the Marquis de Lafayette and Alexis de Tocqueville were, what their 19th-century visits to Auburn were like, and how their tours of the nation shaped their views of America and American democracy.
Through the Eyes of Lafayette & Tocqueville will take place from 6:30-8:00p at the museum’s Carriage House Theater on Wednesday, November 5. Admission is $30 for the general public and $25 for museum members. Ticket information can be found here.
