A 24-year-old man is expected to get five years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty on Thursday to a charge of felony attempted murder.
On February 2, 2024, Cayuga County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Rockingham Road in Sennett just before 9:00 a.m. for the report of a woman being attacked while walking her dog. An investigation found John Netti left a parked dump trailer on the side of the road, approached the victim, and began to strangle her as she tried to flee. A neighbor saw the incident and began shouting at Netti while calling 911. Netti then fled into Highland Golf Course. Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Auburn Police Department searched the course where they found Netti and arrested him. Authorities said Netti was not associated with the victim in any way prior to the attack.
Two psychiatrists determined last year that Netti was not mentally competent to stand trial, so he was placed in a secure mental health facility.
The Citizen reports Netti will be sentenced on May 1st.
