Auburn Police are investigating the discovery of what may be human skeletal remains unearthed during excavation work at a construction site at Auburn Community Hospital.
Officers responded to the scene around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday after a contractor reported the find. The Cayuga County Coroner and the District Attorney’s Office also responded. The coroner conducted an initial inspection and believed the remains to be human.
According to police, hospital officials helped determine that the area where the remains were found had likely not been disturbed in more than 50 years. Authorities say it appears that only one set of remains was uncovered.
Because of the possible age of the remains, state law requires involvement from the New York State Archaeologist. The State Police Forensic Investigative Unit has also been contacted, and plans are underway to exhume the remains for further analysis.
Details such as the age, sex, and cause of death remain unknown. Police say further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
