Healthcare Workers Union Endorses Cayuga County Democrats

The union representing New York healthcare workers has announced its endorsements for Cayuga County candidates.

1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East has endorsed eight candidates, all Democrats, in their bids to either win or retain their seats throughout the county.

Sara Cooper, Central and Northern New York Political Coordinator for the union told Finger Lakes News Radio, “All of the Cayuga County endorsed candidates we’re endorsing have been willing and able and passionate about standing with us in our labor fight, and we really are grateful for their support as candidates,”

In Auburn, Jimmy Giannettino has received the endorsement for mayor. There are also two seats open for city council this election year and 1199 hopes they’ll be filled by Christina Calarco and Rhoda Overstreet Wilson.

Aileen McNabb-Coleman, Stephanie DeVito, Brian Muldrow, and Heidi Nightengale have received the union’s support for their county legislature bids.  Nightengale, DeVito, and Muldrow hope to win districts located within the City of Auburn – Districts 8, 10, and 11 respectively. McNabb-Coleman hopes to stay in office, representing the new District 5 which will cover Owasco and Sennett.

In the three-way race for county clerk, United Healthcare Workers East has endorsed Brian Scanlan as he looks to fill the position being left vacant by Sue Dwyer’s retirement.

“They help the power of our union grow but they also put their money where their mouth is and are not afraid to fight for their constituents who are our union members in different nursing homes and the hospital throughout Auburn and Cayuga County,” Cooper continued.

Election day is November 7, with early voting beginning October 28.
