An upcoming event in downtown Auburn will discuss a famous Auburn murder trial.
Professor Robin Bernstein, Harvard professor and cultural historian specializing in racism from the 19th century to the present, will discuss her latest book, Freeman’s Challenge: The Murder that Shook America’s Original Prison for Profit at Auburn Public Theater on Wednesday. The event is being hosted by the Seward House Museum.
The book covers the life of William Freeman, an African American who was incarcerated at Auburn State Prison. Years later, Freeman would be released and committed what the Seward House calls “a horrific murder that terrified the community.”
William Seward officers his services pro bono as a lawyer in Freeman’s defense, resulting in a backlash against Seward.
A VIP reception, meet and greet, and book signing with take place from 5:30-7:00p at the Equal Rights Heritage Center. The lecture and Q&A session will take place at 7:30p at the theater.
This is a ticketed event and ticket information can be found at sewardhouse.org or by calling the museum at 315-252-1283.
