What changes are in store for the Cayuga County Office Building?
During a special legislature meeting Tuesday night, legislators heard a presentation from Colliers Engineering & Design about options for upgrading the 58-year-old building.
The firm presented three options to the group. Two options would see the necessary renovations made with one option moving the Emergency Management Office and 911 backup to another location. The third option, the one recommended by the firm, would see the construction of a three-story addition to the downtown Auburn facility. That option comes with a $52,380,000 price tag.
While other options were considered, including either rebuilding or relocating the office to another space, the firm decided renovations would be the best option.
An analysis of the building by Colliers Engineering & Design found it in need of renovations. Priorities for the renovations include increasing security, moving departments that need to be accessible to the public to the lower levels of the six-story building, delineating public and staff-only spaces, maintaining parking, and improving the spaces used by office staff.
No action was taken on whether or not to move forward with the proposal, as the session was purely information gathering.
If approved, construction is estimated to last a minimum of two years.
After the building had to be temporarily closed last month following damage sustained during a windstorm, Legislature Chair Aileen McNabb-Coleman announced plans to fast-track the renovation project.
