Cayuga County’s current clerk has named who she wants to succeed her.
County Clerk Sue Dwyer has endorsed fellow Republican Chris Petrus for the position.
“Chris Petrus is the number one person that I trust to carry on the tradition of going above and beyond to help the people in our community,” Dwyer said in her endorsement announcement. “I wholeheartedly endorse Christ Petrus for the next county clerk.”
In her decision, Dwyer cited Petrus’ experience as chair of the county’s Government Operations Committee which oversees the clerk’s office, and his ability to work with others as proof he’s qualified for the job. Dwyer added that Petrus supports the DREAMS project to digitize the county’s records.
“We are in phase one of four, and Chris is the best person to work alongside members of the DREAM team and take us across the finish line to get the project done,” Dwyer continued.
She also mentioned that Petrus plans to reinstate the County Clerk on the Road program which was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. The program saw the clerk travel throughout the county to process passport applications and give veterans discount cards, meaning people in the northern and southern ends wouldn’t need to travel to the clerk’s office in Auburn.
Petrus faces off against both Conservative Kristine Lytle and Democrat-endorsed Brian Scanlan in the November election.
