In an effort to address the backlog of cases and delays in the court system, Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed legislation to add 28 new judges to the state’s court system.
Cayuga County is one of eight counties receiving an additional Family Court judge while Nassau and Suffolk Counties will each receive two additional judges and 16 judges will be added to New York City.
Dia Carabajal, Committee Chair for the Cayuga County Democratic Party, told Finger Lakes News Radio that the party has designated Kristin Garland as its nominee for the new countywide position.
“Kristin has the experience and the temperament that the position demands,” said Carabajal. “We are confident that Kristin Garland will be a patient and fair decision-maker and that she will serve our county well.”
Garland currently serves the City of Auburn as an Associate City Court Judge. She told Finger Lakes News Radio that she hopes to bring that experience to the people of Cayuga County.
“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve our community in Auburn City Court for the past five years. I am running for Family Court Judge to bring my decade of experience practicing in Family Court and my judicial experience to serve the citizens of Cayuga County,” said Garland.
Carabajal added that, due to the legislation passing so late into the election cycle, local Democrat and Republican committees were tasked with selecting their nominees as opposed to petitioning and possible primaries.
“Because it’s a new position and because it’s past the cycle for petitioning to get on the ballot for November, they have given it over to the party committee to name a candidate,” continued Carabajal.
The committee met Wednesday night to confirm Garland as their choice for the position.
Election Day is November 5.
