The date is set for the official opening of Auburn’s new skatepark.
City Councilor Terry Cuddy announced at Thursday’s city council meeting that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the park from 1:00-4:00p on Friday, June 21, coinciding with National Go Out & Skate Day. Cuddy added that special programming for the day is in the works to celebrate.
After minor delays, fencing around the 10,000 sq ft skatepark at Casey Park came down in November and the park has since seen plenty of use.
Created by Grindline Skateparks Inc, the new park replaces the former one that previously stood at Casey Park. The new park is roughly 50% larger than its predecessor.
The new park came with a nearly $1 million price tag. It is hoped that the park will attract visitors from across the region and even the nation as many in the skateboarding community see Grindline parks as destination attractions.
Pavillion renovations and minor site work are scheduled to take place this spring before the ribbon cutting.
