One Auburn City Councilor was at Tuesday evening’s Cayuga County Legislature meeting to speak about Owasco Lake.
Councilor Ginny Kent, who also serves on the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council, shared the city’s concerns with the legislature’s March decision to not renew an agreement with the Finger Lakes Institute to monitor the health of Owasco Lake.
“I want you to think for a moment what would happen if Owasco Lake water was deemed undrinkable,” Kent said. “It would affect every aspect of our lives. Property values would drop new business, new residents, and tourists might look elsewhere.”
Earlier this month, the legislature announced it would seek a request for fee quotes from three different groups, including the Finger Lakes Institute, for lake monitoring.
The city sent a letter to the county urging it to continue its monitoring program, which was read at the meeting by County Legislator Aileen McNabb-Coleman.
