The Cayuga Museum of History and Art reopens Wednesday. With its reopening, there will be a new exhibit featuring artwork from the interwar and post-World War II time eras.

Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Geoff Starks with the museum explained that Reconsideration: Art After the World Wars is an opportunity to explore how artists dealt with the consequences of World War I and II. He called the works of art a powerful look into the past.

“These were very tremendous times of change and revolution and dealing with the tragedies of the most deadly wars in human history,” Starks continued and that’s the time period in which these works are being made. So, we’re inviting people to come and look at this historical artwork.”

While largely known for its historical collections and the Case Research Lab, Starks pointed out the museum is actually the oldest art museum in the county. The museum boasts collections from local, regional, and nationally known artists, with many works being obtained by the museum’s founding director, Walter Long.

The exhibit will be on display through April 6.

While not officially opening until Friday, Starks added that a second new exhibit will also be on viewable at the museum on Weeensday. Americans Who Tell the Truth: Portraits by Robert Shetterly, is a travelling exhibit that features reproductions of portraits of famous changemakers, including Harriet Tubman. This exhibit, in partnership with the Southern Cayuga Anne Frank Tree Project, opens Friday.

Following the exhibit’s run, the museum anticipates temporarily closing in April to allow for work on the West End Arts Campus, a collaboration between Cayuga Museum and Schweinfurth Art Center to improve accessibility between the neighboring institutions and promote more outdoor programming.
