The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is now participating in the Blue Envelope initiative, an initiative that seeks to create more positive experiences between officers and those with autism.
The sheriff’s office is encouraging drivers with autism to obtain an envelope from their office where they can keep their license, insurance card, and other items a law enforcement officer may request upon a traffic stop.
According to the sheriff’s office, “a driver’s physical movements or verbal responses which would normally be appropriate during a traffic stop may be beyond an autistic driver’s control” potentially leading to a misinterpretation by the law enforcement officer. Through this initiative, the blue envelope alerts an officer to the driver’s autism and they can adjust their actions to fit the situation.
To obtain a blue envelope, one can stop by the Cayuga County Public Safety Building (7445 County House Rd) or call 315-253-1222 and press 8 when prompted to arrange for one to be delivered.
