The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is warning of computer tech support scams.
The office warns that scammers will call or message potential victims claiming they’re computer technicians. The person will claim to be with a well-known tech company such as Microsoft or Apple. They’ll then alert the victim to viruses and malware on the victim’s computer, and request remote access or inform the victim that they need to buy new software to fix the problem.
Scammers try to sell useless services, steal credit card numbers, or install malware on computers, which will then allow access to personal data such as passwords. The sheriff advises anyone receiving these messages to hang up and ignore them.
Those in need of tech services are encouraged only to use trusted sources.
