Cayuga County Proclaims Itself Purple Heart Community, Seeks to Honor Recipients

Cayuga County wants to recognize its Purple Heart recipients.

At Tuesday’s county legislature meeting, the legislature issued a proclamation declaring the county a Purple Heart Community.

That declaration has been sent to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a congressionally chartered veterans organization; the organization will record the proclamation on its website and then provide road signs to be placed along roads entering the county, recognizing it as a Purple Heart Community.

Cayuga County Veteran Service Agency Director Kevin Swab told FLX Local Media that he is working to compile a list of living recipients residing in the county. Recipients or those who know a living recipient can contact Swab at 315-253-1281 to be included on the list for future recognition. Swab has identified at least 28 living Purple Heart recipients in the county.

An event to honor the county’s recipients is also being planned for spring.

Given to military members killed or wounded while serving their country, the Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military award still given to service members.
