A ribbon cutting next week will officially open a nature preserve in Cayuga County.
On Thursday, the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council (OLWMC) will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Fillmore Nature Preserve in the Towns of Sempronius and Summerhill.
In January of 2023, the 161 acres of the land that would become the preserve were transferred to the council from the Nature Conservancy, a close partner of the OLWMC. Since then, the council has been working to install an access lot and informational kiosk to increase accessibility to the site.
In October 2023, the OLWMC received a $10,000 grant from the Fred L Emerson Foundation for the kiosk and access lot as well as to create trail markers for the site’s hiking trails.
Doctor Adam Effler is the Executive Director of the council. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Dr Effler said the work is complete.
“The project has come a long way and we’re happy to be at a point where we’re happy to call this a grand opening.”
Effler added that the preserve complements the council’s objective to protect natural resources in perpetuity, keeping them safe from development while promoting the benefits of natural ecosystems.
The grand opening will take place from 2:00-3:00p.
The Fillmore Nature Preserve has no physical address. It’s located on Fillmore Road across from Lick Street. The kiosk is visible from the road.
