Cayuga County Meals on Wheels Program Needs Volunteers

SHARE NOW

The Cayuga County Office for the Aging is once again putting out a call for volunteers to help with its Meals on Wheels Program.

Drivers are needed to deliver hot meals and provide a quick wellness check to those older adults trying to remain in their homes across Cayuga County.

Volunteers can pick their commitment level and choose to deliver food with a partner or solo. The office adds that most volunteers drive once a week; however, some choose to do more while others only act as substitute drivers.

Drivers can also choose which routes to take with some enjoying city routes while others prefer serving the more rural areas of the county.

As the elderly make up an increasing number of the population, both in the county and in the nation, the Office for the Aging is trying to keep up with the increased requests for assistance.

Earlier this year, Jenna Adams with the office explained to Finger Lakes News Radio the vital role volunteers play in helping an isolated population.

“The Meals on Wheels volunteers are very vital within our community,” said Adams. “They often visit people who don’t usually have contact with the outside world, who are isolated. They provide a daily check-in, a nutritious meal, and offer a wellness check which is also a very big part of our program, to make sure that people are thriving in their own home.”

Adams added that, since the county stretches from Lake Ontario to Tompkins County, an ample supply of drivers and substitutes is paramount to the program’s success.

Those interested in volunteering can call 215-253-1104 or email [email protected] while those wishing to inquire about obtaining services can call 315-253-1550 or email [email protected].
