Cayuga Coounty’s Meals on Wheels program is once again in need of volunteers.
Led by the Cayuga County Office for the Aging, the program provides hot meals to elderly individuals throughout Cayuga County. Additionally, Meals on Wheels volunteers often serve as friends and companions to an isolated population that often cannot leave their homes.
Gary Lebo is the Volunteer Coordinator for the county’s Meals on Wheels program. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Lebo said that the program is in need of volunteers to deliver meals in the Auburn and Southern Cayuga County areas. Meals on Wheels operates 14 routes out of Auburn with eight routes covering the city with an additional six encompassing surrounding areas.
Drivers can volunteer for as few as two hours a week or be substitute drivers in the event that a regular driver cannot make their normally scheduled route.
Lebo added that volunteering often proves a gratifying experience.
“Many people get a lot of gratification from this and they often feel like it’s more than they expected in terms of what they’re able to contribute to a vulnerable population.”
