An update from the Cayuga County Health Department on the ongoing efforts to combat hydrilla on Cayuga Lake.

The initial fluridone herbicide treatment by the DEC and the Army Corps of Engineers will begin next week. Originally, treatments were slated to begin on the third.

A total of ten fluridone treatments are planned for the area around the Wells College Bay throughout the summer, with one potential chelated copper treatment in August.

The health department adds that there are no restrictions on drinking, fishing, swimming, boating, or domestic use of treated water; however, the water should not be used for sensitive greenhouse and nursery plants.

Hydrilla is an invasive species of aquatic plant native to Asia, Africa, and Australia.
