How is Cayuga County preparing for the anticipated arrival of Micron to neighboring Onondaga County?
Stephanie DeVito with the Micron Workforce Development Committee told Finger Lakes News Radio they’ve identified areas to work on to make Cayuga County an attractive place for the semiconductor manufacturer and its workers.
“We’ve identified in this commitee two things that we need to keep working on is transportation and daycare. Those are two areas that we’ve been looking at very strongly on how we can better prepare Cayuga County for these things.”
By offering childcare and transportation, potential Micron workers may decide to call Cayuga County home.
Another aspect the Workforce Development Committee is working on is making sure jobs left vacant by county residents switching to work for Micron are able to be filled.
“We need to look at how we’re going to backfill those jobs here in Cayuga County so we don’t lose that employment and that workforce as well.”
DeVito also serves as Executive Director of the Auburn Downtown Business Improvement District. She is optimistic that with people moving into the surrounding area to work for the company, businesses will see a boost in sales.
Other committees are working on such things as housing needs and education of students in area schools.
