Cayuga County is pushing for an independent audit of two utility companies

The Cayuga County legislature voted on Tuesday in favor of a resolution calling on the New York State Public Service Commission and Attorney General’s Office to conduct an independent audit of New York State Gas & Electric (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric’s (RG&E) billing practices to “determine the extent of errors, inconsistencies, and potential overcharges” the companies may have made. The resolution further requests that those findings be made public to ensure transparency and accountability.

According to the resolution, residents and businesses from Cayuga County and beyond have made numerous complaints regarding “inaccurate billing, sudden rate spikes, delayed or estimated meter readings, and lack of transparency in NYSEG and RG&E’s billing practices.” The resolution goes on to state that these inaccuracies have caused residents and businesses financial hardship and bring into question NYSEG and RG&E’s ability to be fair, accountable, and provide proper regulatory oversight.

Certified copies of the resolution are being sent to Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Assembly Minority Leader William Barclay, State Senator Rachel May, Assemblyman John Lemondes, Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan, County Town Supervisors, and the New York State Association of Counties.
