Cayuga County’s hiring freeze has been extended.

The Cayuga County Legislature voted on Tuesday to extend the hiring freeze that began on June 1. Originally set to expire on August 31, the legislature voted to extend the hiring pause through October 31.

The pause applies to most county departments and positions, though the following are exempted: county attorney staffing, caseworkers, staff social workers, custody officers in the jail, seasonal workers, emergency dispatchers, road patrol deputies, supervising social services investigator, heavy and medium equipment operators positions – highway, billing specialist – mental health, real property clerk – treasurer’s office, 100% funded positions (salary and fringe) necessary to do mandated work, social services investigator – DSS, and one DMV cashier – clerk’s office.

When making the decision to implement the freeze, legislators cited financial concerns, with Legislature Chair Jonathan Anna noting that the county is facing a $5.6 million deficit.
