Cayuga County Agencies Looking to Reduce Accidents Involving Farm Vehicles

SHARE NOW

What can be done to prevent vehicle accidents involving slow moving vehicles in Cayuga County?

That was the question posed Thursday night at the Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum. Sheriff Brian Schenck was joined by representatives from the Farm Bureau, Cornell Cooperative Extension to meet with farmers and community members to discuss the issue.

As farm vehicles become larger they take up more road space, drivers can become frustrated when they’re stuck behind them and unable to pass safely. Drivers of passenger drivers are also sometimes unaware of the wide turns certain farm equipment need to make.

Ideas brought up included educating tourists on sharing the road with farm vehicles and adding lights to farm equipment.

Using feedback from the meeting, the Sheriff’s Office, Farm Bureau, and Cornell Cooperative Extension will work on solutions to the problem of accidents involving slow moving vehicles.

Between 2016 and 2022, there were 46 fatal and 2,513 Personal Injury Vehicle Crashes in Cayuga County.
