Is your home smoke-free? That’s the question the Cayuga County Health Department and Tobacco-Free CNY are asking Cayuga County residents.

Both groups are highlighting the negative health effects that secondhand smoke can have on children, older adults, and those with preexisting conditions. Secondhand smoke has been linked to serious health problems, such as respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and cancer.

According to the New York State Department of Health, 18.7% of Cayuga County adults smoke, the second-highest rate in Central New York.

According to a 2022 study, 62% of multi-unit housing in Cayuga County had smoke-free policies. While that is a higher percentage compared to nearby counties, Tobacco-Free CNY said many were recently adopted. The group adds that these policies are most effective when residents know about them, when they are properly enforced, and when cessation resources are available.

Those with concerns about secondhand smoke in their homes or apartments are encouraged to talk to their landlords or management about existing smoke-free policies. Additionally, residents are encouraged to keep a record of smoke exposure to discuss with management.

More information on smoke-free housing options can be found at tobaccofreenys.org. To learn more or get assistance with smoke-free housing policies, contact Tobacco-Free CNY at 315-435-3280 or visit tobaccofreecny.org.

Tobacco-Free CNY serves Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties.
