The village of Aurora is advancing its partnership with Wells College to preserve the institution’s legacy and enhance local resources. Following a special meeting last Saturday, Mayor Jim Orman announced progress on two initiatives tied to the college’s assets:
1. Historical Artifacts: The village plans to acquire Wells College’s stagecoach and omnibus, with a memorandum of understanding outlining the transfer. These pieces reflect the history of the college and its ties to founder Henry Wells, who co-founded Wells Fargo and American Express.
2. Waterfront Development: Aurora has made an offer to purchase Wells College’s lakefront property, which includes the boathouse and nearby land. The village intends to create a waterfront park, providing enhanced public access and recreational opportunities.
The Citizen reports both proposals require state approval to move forward.
Wells College, established in 1868 as a women’s college, announced its impending closure in April due to financial challenges.
