A recent audit by the New York State Education Department has flagged more than $625,000 in reported costs at the E. John Gavras Center in Auburn.
The not-for-profit organization, operated by UCPA of Cayuga County, provides preschool integrated special education services for children ages 3 to 5. The audit, part of the State Education Department’s Preschool Special Education Audit Initiative, reviewed compliance with the Reimbursable Cost Manual for the three fiscal years ending June 30, 2021.
During that period, the Gavras Center reported roughly $4.3 million in reimbursable costs to the state. Auditors found that $625,534 of those costs did not meet state requirements, though the report does not indicate any criminal wrongdoing.
The findings highlight the importance of strict compliance in cost reporting for state-funded preschool special education programs, which aim to provide critical services to children with disabilities.
