Auburn’s gearing up for the return of its youth summer recreation program.
Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Summer Rec Coordinator Brian Rhodes said that this year will feature new activities for the kids.
“We’re working with the YMCA on Thursdays and we’re going to utilize the Casey Park pool to do swim lessons,” said Rhodes. “We hired a BMX company to come in and do a BMX show at our new skatepark; another one is a wildlife presentation where they’re going to bring in some exotic animals and reptiles.”
Preregistration is required for the swim lessons at Casey Park and can be done here.
Rhodes added that a returning activity will be expanded. The culinary program was previously only offered on Wednesdays; however, this year more kids will have an opportunity to prepare healthy meals as it will be offered every day.
“It was such a hit last summer that we’re going to do it every day,” said Rhodes.
Other presentations and activities returning include arts and crafts, sports, reading, fire safety from the Auburn Fire Department, bike safety, and a drone presentation from the Auburn Police Department.
The great thing about our program is we do have presentations and certain activities but really the kids are free to do what they want and all the parks have great playgrounds so the kids are encouraged to have some free time on the playground,” continued Rhodes.
The summer rec program will take place from 1:00-4:00p from July 9 through August 15 at three parks in the city. Activities will be held on Tuesdays at Lincoln Park, Wednesdays at Clifford Park, and Thursdays at Casey Park.
While all programs are free, parents or guardians need to sign their kids in and out of each day’s activities.
