Auburn is urging the governor and the state legislature to continue and increase aid for local governments in the 2025-2026 state budget.
City Council voted Thursday on a resolution calling on Governor Kathy Hochul and the legislature to continue providing an additional $50 million in Aid and Incentives to Municipalities (AIM) funding. After 15 years of not increasing the unrestricted funds, $50 million was allocated to municipalities in the 2024-2025 budget as Temporary Mutual Assistance, leading to uncertainty as to whether the funding would continue.
Officials also want the state to develop a long-term plan to ensure AIM funding keeps up with inflation.
The unrestricted funding is vital for local governments to maintain infrastructure, public safety, housing, and other municipal services.
Copies of the resolution are being sent to Governor Hochul, Assemblyman John Lemondes, State Senator Rachel May, and the New York State Conference of Mayors.
Additionally, residents are urged to contact state officials and show their support for AIM funding increases. Representatives’ contact information can be found below.
