Good news for one area animal shelter.
The Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York in Auburn has reached its $80,000 fundraising goal for much-needed facility improvements Executive Director Nick Lapresi made the announcement to Finger Lakes News Radio. He said none of this would have been possible without community support.
“I can’t speak enough about our community,” Lapresi said. “This really shows that our community supports us, that they want us here, that they’re behind us these upgrades. The community really voiced their opinion and spoke up.”
Back in August, funds sent to the SPCA via the mail were stolen from the shelter’s mailbox, leaving the shelter still needing $60,000 in October.
In December of 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Animal Care Companion Standards Act which sets standards for all shelters and rescues within the state. By reaching the $80,000 threshold before the December 31 deadline, the shelter will get $115,000 in match grant funds. This will allow for the crucial upgrades to the facility allowing it to comply with those standards.
“Without being able to get this funding; without being able to do this construction, come December 2025 when the law goes into effect, our ability to register as a shelter within New York State would be at risk… and if that was to happen, then we’re not a registered shelter, then we would have to close our doors,” Lapresi continued.
This improvement project consists of three main components: Firstly, the 70-year-old dog kennels will be replaced with larger ones that feature soundproofing.
Secondly, the clinic room will be removed and replaced with a new one on the other side of the building. Not only will this move it away from the dog run, but also allow for better care for shelter animals as well as for community services such as spaying and neutering pets.
Finally, two HVAC systems and a backup generator will be installed. There will also be new insulation and siding put on the entire building.
As quotes for work and materials are subject to change, the SPCA is still accepting donations for the project. Donations can be made online, in person, or through the mail. The facility has since installed a lockbox for mail.
