Who is running for the Auburn School Board this year?
There are three seats up for grabs with two candidates appearing on the ballot and a third announcing a write-in campaign.
Melissa Deyneka and Noel Romeo will be on the ballot.
Melissa Deyneka is a 1993 graduate of Auburn High School and a 1995 graduate of Cayuga Community College who currently works at Cayuga-Onondafa BOCES. She has two children. She began volunteering at Owasco Elementary while her children attended school there, spending eight years as the PTO president.
Noel Romeo has called Auburn home for the past 23 years. A mother of 11, her experience in education includes work as the director of a Montessori School and a teacher.
Matteo Bartolotta, Ian Phillips, and Sam Giangreco’s terms expire this year. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Bartolotta said he has launched a write-in campaign to prevent an empty seat on the board. He added that with the process of picking a new superintendent underway and work about to begin on putting together a new Capital Improvement project, he felt it best to stay on.
“I decided I’ve got three years in, what’s another three? So I decided to do a write-in,” said Bartolotta.
Elections will be held on May 21 along with the budget vote. Each position carries a three-year term.
Due to the creation of new legislative and election districts, polling places have changed for this year. Polling sites are now as follows:
- Casey Park Elementary: Legislative District 8
- Owasco Elementary School: Legislative District 10-1 and portions of Owasco
- Seward Elementary School: Legislative Districts 10-2, 10-3, & 11 and portions of Fleming
- Auburn Junior High School: Legislative District 9 and portions of Sennett
Polls will be open from 7:00a-9:00p. More information can be found on the district’s website.
