After the owner of the Auburn Schine Theatre told city officials its rehabilitation would move forward, the city has resumed legal action to seize the theatre.
According to the Citizen, the city has filed a summons requiring the owner, Schines Theater LLC, to serve notice within 30 days that the historic Art Deco theatre is not abandoned. If not, the summons says, the city will move to take possession of it.
City officials say the theatre is uninhabitable and structurally unsound. A notice posted on the building’s doors over the summer stated that, as of July 24, Auburn Code Enforcement had determined the building to be legally abandoned per state property laws.
Completed in 1938, the 2,000-seat theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
