An Auburn man has been sentenced to 7⅓ to 22 years in state prison for a deadly crash that claimed the life of a 67-year-old pedestrian earlier this year.
The Citizen reports Christopher Dewitt received the sentence Thursday afternoon in Cayuga County Court from Judge Thomas Leone after pleading guilty in May to aggravated vehicular homicide, a Class B felony.
The charges stem from a January 10 incident, when Dewitt struck and killed the victim, identified as Stockwell, on North Street. According to the Auburn Police Department, Dewitt was driving southbound at a high rate of speed, crossed into the opposite lane, and failed to stop at a traffic signal before hitting Cynthia Stockwell.
As part of the plea, the 31-year-old Dewitt also satisfied charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, both Class D felonies, along with multiple traffic violations.
Dewitt will serve his sentence in a New York State correctional facility.
