Auburn residents may soon get a knock on their doors from city staff as the city continues its lead service line inventory project.
Staff from the Department of Municipal Utilities will be working in neighborhoods throughout the city this fall, contacting residents at their homes to verify the incoming waterline material at their residences. Those who have already had their waterline identified will not be contacted.
The city also said that staff going through the neighborhoods will have their city IDs on them and will present them when asked.
Additionally, residents can submit their own photo of their waterline or make an appointment for staff to come and identify it for them. Those looking to set up an appointment can do so by calling 315-255-4142. Those wishing to take their own photos of their home’s incoming waterline material can send them along with their name and address to [email protected].
In 2017, the US Environmental Protection Agency began issuing legislation requiring communities to develop a Lead Service Line Inventory for water service lines. This is the first step in eventually replacing lead service lines nationwide.
In July 2023, the city accepted a $917,988 grant to digitize paper records on the materials used to bring water into homes and perform fieldwork to fill in gaps in the records.
Once complete, the inventory will allow the city to see where lead service lines are present and determine what needs to be replaced.
The city’s water system is roughly 140 years old. In 1931, Auburn began using copper rather than lead for its service lines.
