As people make their final preparations for Thanksgiving, the Auburn Fire Department is sharing tips to make your holiday a safe one.
In the event of a grease fire, the department says to never use water on it. Instead, if a grease fire occurs on a stove, cover the pan with a lid to deprive the fire of oxygen. If the fire occurs in an oven, close the door and shut it off.
For those deep frying their birds this year, the department recommends cooking on a level surface away from buildings and flammable objects. Additionally, oil should be kept around 350°F. Before dropping the turkey into the oil, ensure it is fully thawed and the flame has been turned off.
AFD adds that fires can expand quickly so, if a fire becomes out of control, retreat to a safe location and call 911.
According to the department, grease and oil fires account for nearly half of all residential fires in the US.
