Auburn Discussing How to Handle Short-Term Rentals

SHARE NOW

The City of Auburn is working on ways to deal with potential issues arising from an increase in the popularity of short-term rental properties such as those found on Airbnb.

Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, City Clerk Chuck Mason said their popularity has caused issues for the city’s zoning board.

“People are coming for the permits and it’s very challenging because we don’t necessarily have language in our code that addresses these Airbnbs. We have language that addresses hotel bed and breakasts, hotels, but not these Airbnbs.”

Mason added that the city could potentially develop a new process for approving short-term rentals or adding language to its current codes to address them.

At its December 12 meeting, city council listened to a presentation by Stephen Selvek, Deputy Director of Planning & Development, on the benefits and impacts of short-term rentals and options the council has moving forward on how to manage them.

Additionally, municipalities across the state are awaiting possible legislation in Albany that could impact how they can deal with these rentals.

The city estimates there are currently 60-80 short-term rentals within its limits.
