Auburn Councilors Express Concerns Over E-Bikes, E-Scooters

SHARE NOW

Auburn City Councilors are sharing concerns about the rise in e-bike and e-scooter use in the city.

The topic was brought up at last week’s city council meeting by Counilor Ginny Kent, who said she’s heard concerns from several residents over their use while expressing her own.

“I’ve had several some residents, several residents express concerns about this,” said Counilor Kent. “I’m seeing people that are clearly under 16 operating these, many without helmets. It’s not a safe situation.”

Councilor Kent added that the city does not have local regulations but relies on state regulations, which she said may not be enough. Councilor Terry Cuddy followed Councilor Kent, suggesting City Council confer with Corporation Counsel to see what cities similar to Auburn are doing to combat unsafe e-bike and e-scooter use.

I’m characterizing the feedback we’re getting as it’s all about safety safety of the operators and safety of other people that use our walkways and roads, so that’s what we’re hoping to do, come up with something more substantial than relying on state law,” said Councilor Cuddy.

City Manager JenniferHaines said she’d discuss the issue of unsafe e-bike use with Auburn Police Department Chief Matt Andorsko.
