Auburn Approves Community Gardens at 2 City Parks

Two community garden projects in Auburn will move forward.

Auburn City Council voted on Thursday to allow one community garden to be constructed at Miles/Lepak Park. Harriet’s Community Garden at the Harriet Tubman Memorial AME Zion Church was also granted permission to expand into neighboring Calvary Park.

Anna Ritter is organizing the garden at Miles/Lepak Park. She previously told Finger Lakes News Radio that she intends to construct ten 4×8′ beds for people without space at their homes to grow produce.

“They are the difference between someone having access to fresh vegetables and not having access,” said Ritter.

She plans to have the garden up and running in the spring and is currently seeking grant funding to cover start-up costs, such as mulch, lumber for the beds, and fencing. Those interested in becoming involved with the project can contact Ritter at [email protected].

Harriet’s Garden currently consists of four 4×10′ beds on church property. With the approval of the City Council, the church will add an additional four beds on the Franklin Street side of Calvary Park.

The council also approved the continuation of the permaculture park, also at Miles/Lepak Park.
