New York State Police issued dozens of tickets during a targeted enforcement effort aimed at improving safety in highway work zones.

Troopers conducted a six-hour Operation Hard Hat detail on Interstate 590 in Rochester on April 20, working alongside construction crews to monitor traffic and identify unsafe driving behavior. The initiative places officers directly within active work zones to observe violations and take enforcement action.

Despite winter-like conditions, crews remained on site throughout the operation, with troopers focusing on speeding and distracted driving—two of the leading causes of work zone crashes.

According to the New York State Police, a total of 66 tickets were issued during the detail. That included 45 work zone speed violations, six additional speeding tickets, one cell phone violation, and 14 other vehicle and traffic infractions.

Officials say the number of violations in just six hours underscores the ongoing dangers faced by highway workers and the need for increased driver awareness in construction zones.

State Police are reminding motorists that most violations in work zones carry doubled fines. Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, avoid distractions, and follow the state’s Move Over Law when approaching roadside workers.
