Syracuse University announced on Wednesday that Adrian Autry will not return as head coach of the men’s basketball program for the 2026–27 season. According to Cuse.com, a national search for the program’s next head coach has begun and will move quickly.
“Adrian first came to Syracuse as a student-athlete in 1990, and this program has been a constant in his life ever since—as a player, assistant coach, associate head coach and ultimately as head coach,” said Director of Athletics John Wildhack ’80. “His dedication to our student-athletes on and off the court never wavered throughout his time here, and we are grateful for his service and commitment to Orange basketball.”
“It has been an honor to coach at my alma mater,” Autry said. “I want to thank Chancellor Kent Syverud, John Wildhack, Jim Boeheim, my team, and my staff for their support.”
Autry was named the program’s eighth head coach in March 2023, following the retirement of Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim. Autry compiled a 49–48 record in three seasons, including a 20-win campaign and 11 ACC victories in his first year as head coach. Before leading the program, he spent 12 seasons on Boeheim’s staff, coaching through seven NCAA Tournament appearances and Final Four runs in 2013 and 2016.
Syracuse University said it is committed to returning men’s basketball to national prominence and will conduct a thorough but expedited search for the program’s next head coach.
“We are going to move quickly and with purpose,” Wildhack said. “This is one of the most storied programs in college basketball, and we intend to hire a proven winner who will build on that legacy. We are looking for a coach who can recruit at the highest level, develop players and compete for championships, conference and national. Syracuse fans deserve nothing less, and that is exactly what we are going to deliver.”
