Chris Major, a retired Auburn police officer running for Cayuga County sheriff, has received an endorsement from Justin Herrling, president of the Auburn Teachers Association.
Herrling, who has worked alongside Major in schools and the community, said he supports Major for sheriff because of his integrity, professionalism and commitment to public service.
Major and Herrling have collaborated through Major’s nonprofit, Majorpalooza, and during Major’s tenure as a school resource officer and special patrol officer, a role for retired law enforcement officers that includes school security assignments.
Major is seeking the Republican and Conservative nominations to succeed Brian Schenck, who has served as sheriff since 2019 and announced he will not run for reelection. Rob Franklin, detective lieutenant in the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, is also running and has been endorsed by Schenck, Undersheriff Stuart Peenstra and the Sheriff’s Employee Association of Cayuga County. Former Sheriff David Gould, who hired Franklin as a deputy, has also endorsed Franklin.
Although Major has not served in the sheriff’s office, he spent 21 years with the Auburn Police Department and helped lead the implementation of the school resource officer program. He has said that if elected, he wants to strengthen public safety and maintain the office’s accessibility and responsiveness.
