The September ICE raid on a Cayuga County food production facility and Seneca Falls’ history made their way into Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State Address earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul delivered her State of the State Address in Albany. During the address, she remarked on the state’s historical ties to immigrants and ICE’s actions across the nation, including raids in New York State, such as the one that occurred at Nutrition Bar Confectioners in Cato.
“Over the past year, communities across New York, from farms in Sacketts Harbor to factories in Cayuga County to high schools on Long Island, have been shaken by aggressive federal immigration actions that go too far,” the governor said.
She then went on to describe actions she will take to protect New Yorkers against ICE actions. For example, Hochul said she will not allow state resources to assist federal immigration raids unless the suspects have committed serious crimes.
After Cayuga County’s mention, the governor invoked the history of Seneca Falls’ role in the Women’s Suffrage movement when discussing the state’s history of fighting for freedom and civil rights.
“We are the people who shed blood at Saratoga, blazed a trail from Seneca Falls, demanded dignity at Stonewall,” Hochul said. “When the American experiment is put to the test, when the path ahead is dark, it is New Yorkers who light the way forward.”
