Cayuga County’s outgoing sheriff has announced who he wants to be his successor

Sheriff Brian Schenck has officially endorsed Rob Franklin for the role of sheriff.

In his endorsement letter, Sheriff Schenck said Franklin’s experience, leadership skills, fiscal responsibility, and ability to build community trust make him the right man for the job.

Franklin, a current Detective Lieutenant in the sheriff’s office, said he’s humbled to receive the sheriff’s support.

“I am humbled to receive, and I wholeheartedly accept, the endorsement for Cayuga County Sheriff from Brian Schenck. I began working directly with Brian as a detective in 2013. In the years since, I have had the privilege of working for him when he was the detective lieutenant and as the Sheriff. I have witnessed firsthand his dedication to this department, to the county, and most importantly, to the people. We share the vision of a strong sheriff’s office whose aim is to secure and maintain a safe community and enhance the quality of life for the citizens we serve. It is written in the Sheriff’s mission statement and executed by the incredible deputies and civilian staff at the Sheriff’s Office every day. I look forward to upholding these traditions as Cayuga County Sheriff.”

A month after Sheriff Schenck announced he would not seek reelection, Franklin announced his intention to run, hoping to appear on the Republican and Conservative lines. Since then, he’s been racking up endorsements, including those from Undersheriff Stuart Peenstra, Former Sheriff David Gould, the Sheriff’s Employees Association of Cayuga County, and the Cayuga County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Association.

Franklin isn’t the only person seeking the Republican and Conservative Party’s nominations, though. Chris Major, a  21-year veteran of the Auburn Police Department, also announced he’s running, hoping to represent Republicans and Conservatives on the ballot line.
