City of Auburn Makes Decision on Employee Health Insurance

The city of Auburn will remain in the Cayuga County Health Insurance Consortium.

City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to remain in the consortium to buy employee health insurance with the county, the city of Oneonta, along with Cayuga Community College, and the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District. City Clerk Chuck Mason, on Friday’s FLX Morning on Finger Lakes News Radio, said that the city staff did explore other options in the area, and it was determined that staying with the Cayuga County Health Consortium was the best financial deal for Auburn.

“Now with all that being said, unfortunately health insurance has been a major expense to municipalities and counties all over the place, not just Auburn, but it has definitely been a few years where we’ve seen double-digit increases, and it has to do with the bigger picture items that are happening in the world, at the national level especially,” said Mason.  “So doing everything we can to try to keep the cost of health insurance down is a priority of the Mayor and Council, and an absolute necessity, actually.”

The new agreement is for three years, at the request of the city, and begins Jan. 1 and continues through 2028.
