Auburn City Council will vote Thursday on the plan to relocate Cayuga County’s Backup 911 Center while its office building remains closed.

Under the plan, the county would lease 368.82 sq ft of space at the city’s Fire Station No. 1 at 31 Seminary Street for an annual cost of $5,716.71 for a period of five years. Parties would be able to renew or terminate the agreement with proper notice – 60 days for an extension and 365 days for termination.

If approved, millions of dollars’ worth of equipment will need to be relocated from the office building to the fire station, a task that Legislature Chair Johnathan Anna previously said would take months to complete.

Officials say the equipment is crucial for maintaining public safety communications should the county’s primary center go offline.

The office building has been closed since the spring of 2024 due to vermiculite contamination in its upper levels. asbestos contamination. Roughly a year later, testing would confirm the presence of asbestos in the building’s basement, where the backup 911 equipment is stored.
