Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck says he will not seek a third term when his current term ends in 2026.

Schenck, who has spent nearly 30 years with the Sheriff’s Office — including the last eight as Sheriff — announced his decision Tuesday, saying it comes after much reflection on both his career and future.

“It has been both rewarding and a privilege to serve this community,” Schenck said. “After much reflection, I have decided that it is time for me to take a new path — one that allows me to pursue new opportunities and, most importantly, spend more time with my family and friends.”

Schenck said he remains committed to fulfilling his duties through the remainder of his term and ensuring a smooth transition to new leadership at the end of next year.

First elected in 2018, Schenck said he is proud of the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and the agency’s mission to “secure and maintain a safe community and enhance the lives of all citizens we serve.”

“When the time comes, I look forward to passing the leadership of our agency to a new administration — one that I hope will continue to advance our mission and strengthen your Sheriff’s Office, which belongs to the people we serve,” he said.

Schenck thanked residents for their trust and support over his nearly three decades of service, calling it “the honor of a lifetime.”
