Cayuga County Recovers Thousands From Fraud Cases Through State Program

SHARE NOW

Over $85,000 in restitution has been collected by Cayuga County over the past year through the New York State Crimes Against Revenue Program (CARP).

Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci said the program targets individuals who intentionally fail to pay taxes or commit financial fraud involving Medicaid, welfare, unemployment, or workers’ compensation benefits.

Locally, the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office partners with the Department of Social Services and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office to investigate and prosecute these types of financial crimes.

In addition to the restitution collected, officials say the county also saw projected savings of more than $95,000 in 2024 from disqualifications in Department of Social Services cases.

Anyone who suspects welfare or benefits fraud can report it anonymously by calling 315-253-1313, submitting an online report to the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, or contacting the District Attorney’s Office.

Examples of fraud include failing to report income or assets, misrepresenting who lives in a household, submitting false documents, or using another person’s benefit card.
