As state officials review a proposed expansion of the Seneca Meadows landfill, a local environmental group is seeking public input.
Seneca Lake Guardian has created a 29-question survey focused on the landfill’s effects on residents’ health and quality of life. The survey includes demographic questions about how close respondents live or work to the landfill, whether children attend nearby schools, and if anyone in the household is employed by Seneca Meadows Inc. It also asks broader questions for people living more than 50 miles away.
The group says survey results could help shape comments submitted to the Department of Environmental Conservation once the landfill’s draft Environmental Impact Statement is finalized.
Seneca Meadows has applied for a permit to expand its Town of Waterloo property by 47 acres in a valley infill area, which would extend operations through 2040. Under a 2016 local law, the landfill is supposed to close by the end of this year, though its state operating permit runs through 2025, when the site is also expected to reach capacity.
