Cayuga County Legislature to Get Office Building Update Thurs

SHARE NOW

A special Cayuga County Legislature Meeting on Thursday will provide an update on the Cayuga County Office building.

Members of Campus Construction Management Group will give a presentation on the state of the closed building located at 160 Genesee St, Auburn. The group was appointed project manager earlier this year after asbestos was confirmed in the area of the 59-year-old structure housing the county’s backup 911 center and IT equipment..

The building was originally closed in January 2024 after winter storms damaged the roof, necessitating emergency repairs. The office was closed again in May after heavy rains led to a granular material, later determined to be vermiculite, collecting under a number of window frames within the structure.

In August 2024, a fire broke out on the building’s front facade; the Auburn Fire Department quickly extinguished it.

Due to the closure, departments have had to find other places to operate. For example, the DMV relocated to the county’s public safety building while Auburn and county officials agreed to move the 911 backup center and the primary data center to the city’s Fire Station No. 1. The county also began leasing space at the former LNB building at 63 Genesee St, Auburn, to act as a temporary office building.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00p at the Ward O’Hara Ag Museum and will be streamed on YouTube.
