Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck released a statement on Friday addressing community questions and concerns following the September 4 federal search warrants executed at Nutrition Bar Confectioners.
Sheriff Schenck said the Sheriff’s Office assisted U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with scene security and traffic safety at the request of U.S. Border Patrol, under a long-standing agreement dating back to 2009.
“I hear you. I understand these concerns and I am listening,” Schenck wrote, acknowledging the impact enforcement actions can have on local families and the migrant workforce that supports area businesses. He also emphasized that the Sheriff’s Office was not leading the investigation and that HSI’s work remains ongoing.
The raid, led by Homeland Security Investigations, involved more than 50 people. Those facing charges were taken to the Border Patrol station in Oswego County for processing. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York John Sarcone confirmed that five of the 57 detainees have been charged with illegal reentry, while the remaining individuals are being held for immigration processing.
Scholarly Schenck added, “Addressing public safety, investigating criminal activity, and holding those who commit crime accountable are priorities for our Sheriff’s Office. That is what we do each day and will continue to do moving forward.”
He thanked community members for their feedback and encouraged continued communication with the Sheriff’s Office.
