A $75,000 grant will help Auburn replace its aging hanging baskets and planter pots with new self-watering ones.

Back in February, the city sent a request to State Senator Rachel May for funding assistance to purchase 125 hanging basket pots and 75 planter pots for downtown. Last month, Senator May notified the city that she had secured a $75,000 Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology Program grant to assist the city.

The city stated that its current hanging baskets are over 10 years old, past their useful life, while its planter pots are all 20+ years old, necessitating their replacement. Additionally, by replacing the older planters with new self-watering ones, the city said it will cut down on water usage.

City Council will vote Thursday to formally accept the grant and allow Mayor Jimmy Giannettino and city staff to move forward with necessary documentation.
